AA ATHENS -- The remains of Michael Mosley, a British TV presenter who had been missing, were discovered on a Greek island Sunday morning following a multi-day search, as confirmed by his family.

AA According to a police spokesperson, speaking anonymously due to an ongoing investigation, a body was located on a rocky coastline by a private boat, with formal identification pending.

AA Mosley’s wife released a statement explaining that her husband had veered off course during a hike and collapsed in an area where he couldn’t easily be seen. Mosley had disappeared on Symi Island on Wednesday afternoon.

AA “Michael was an adventurous soul, a quality that defined him,” said Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley. “Losing Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind, and brilliant husband, is devastating. We shared an incredibly fortunate life together, filled with love and happiness.”

AA She expressed gratitude to the people of Symi Island, who she said had tirelessly searched for him.

AA “Some individuals on the island, unfamiliar with Michael, worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk without being asked,” she added. “The overwhelming love and support from people around the globe have brought my family and me great solace. Michael held a special place in the hearts of many.”

AA Lefteris Papakalodoukas, the mayor of the island, recounted to The Associated Press how he and members of the media spotted a body about 20 meters above Agia Marina beach from their boat. “Upon zooming with the cameras, we recognized him,” he said.

AA The mayor described the scene where Mosley seemed to have fallen down a steep, rocky incline, coming to rest against a fence, lying face-up with rocks atop him.

AA During the retrieval of Mosley’s body, one police officer reportedly slipped on the slope and had to be evacuated on a stretcher, as local media reported. The body will undergo autopsy on the nearby island of Rhodes.

AA Mosley, aged 67, was renowned in Britain for his frequent television and radio appearances, as well as his column in the Daily Mail newspaper. Internationally, he gained recognition for his 2013 book “The Fast Diet,” co-authored with journalist Mimi Spencer, which popularized the "5:2 diet" method. He later explored rapid weight loss programs and produced several documentaries on diet and exercise.

AA Known for his willingness to experiment on himself, Mosley once lived with tapeworms in his intestines for six weeks for the BBC documentary “Infested! Living With Parasites.”

AA He and his wife, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, also a doctor, author, and health columnist, had four children together.
