AA PARIS -- Novak Djokovic found himself uncertain about his participation in the French Open quarterfinals after sustaining a right knee injury on Monday. Despite needing anti-inflammatory medication to persevere through his gripping five-set victory against No. 23 Francisco Cerundolo, Djokovic emerged triumphant with a scoreline of 6-1, 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at Roland Garros, securing his record 370th win in a Grand Slam match.

AA "I was," Djokovic admitted, "maybe three or four points away from losing this match."

AA The Serbian star revealed that the knee had been bothering him for a couple of weeks, but the situation worsened after he aggravated it early in the second set on Monday. Despite receiving medical attention, including a timeout and visits from a trainer and a doctor who administered medication, Djokovic struggled with concerns about his ability to move freely.

AA Reflecting on the match, Djokovic confessed to contemplating whether he should continue playing. Although early scans offered reassurance, he remains apprehensive and plans to undergo further scans on Tuesday.

AA He is scheduled to face No. 7 seed Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Ruud, who defeated No. 12 Taylor Fritz in four sets on Monday, previously lost to Djokovic in the French Open final last year and to Rafael Nadal in the 2022 title match.

AA "I don't know until [Tuesday] if I can step out and play," Djokovic expressed uncertainty about the quarterfinals. "I hope so. ... Let's see what happens."

AA This marked Djokovic's second consecutive five-set comeback victory, lasting about 4½ hours, as the world No. 1. In the third round, he also found himself trailing 2-1 in sets but managed to surpass No. 30 Lorenzo Musetti, 22, from Italy, concluding Sunday after 3 a.m. — the latest finish in French Open history.

AA With Monday's win, Djokovic surpassed Roger Federer for the most match wins at major tournaments and the most Slam quarterfinal appearances for a man, reaching the 59th of his career.

AA Signs of trouble for Djokovic emerged in the second set when he started flexing his right leg. He took a medical timeout and received treatment on the sideline, including a massage and hamstring work.

AA Despite visible discomfort, Djokovic persevered in a manner characteristic of his dominance and 24 major trophies, both by reversing a match after trailing and excelling under pressure.

AA He now holds a career record of 40-11 in fifth sets.

A A "How did I find the way to win again? I don't know," Djokovic addressed the Court Philippe Chatrier crowd. "The only explanation I have is you. Thank you."
