AA In the coming year, Snohomish County residents can anticipate the convenience of tuning into their local government proceedings right from their living rooms.
AA Drawing inspiration from the likes of C-SPAN at the national level and TVW for the state, the Snohomish County Council recently allocated $520,000 in funding to kickstart the establishment of "SnoCo TV," a platform dedicated to streaming all facets of county government affairs.
AA Jill Scott, acting as project manager for SnoCo TV, expressed the county's aspirations for the station, aiming to foster greater engagement among businesses and residents, thereby enhancing accessibility to county resources.
AA County Executive Dave Somers underscored the significance of Snohomish County TV as a pivotal tool for enhancing transparency and accessibility in county proceedings, emphasizing its role in facilitating community involvement in local governance.
AA The allocated funds will primarily be directed towards the acquisition and installation of cameras and microphones, with the remainder earmarked for outfitting rooms to facilitate seamless content streaming. Construction is slated to commence later this year.
AA While specifics regarding annual project costs remain pending, the county's 2024 blueprint indicates a relatively modest initial budgetary allocation.
AA Anticipated to be available on Comcast, Ziply, and Wave by 2025, the exact channel allocation is yet to be determined. Additionally, the broadcasts will be accessible via online streaming.
AA SnoCo TV will feature live streaming of County Council sessions and select court proceedings. Fixed cameras will be stationed in the Jackson Board Room for council meetings and a Superior Court courtroom, supplemented by portable units for covering press conferences, ribbon cuttings, and other events.
AA SnoCo TV's headquarters will be situated in the basement of the county courthouse in downtown Everett.
AA Envisioned as a valuable resource not only for Snohomish County municipalities but also for neighboring counties, SnoCo TV seeks to facilitate informed civic engagement and foster regional connectivity.
AA "We aim to enhance information dissemination and raise awareness regarding vital government operations and assistance programs, such as park inaugurations, Public Works initiatives, and public gatherings," explained Scott.
AA Similar initiatives already exist in neighboring counties. King County operates KCTV, while Skagit County boasts Skagit21, both dedicated to streaming local government proceedings. KCTV, for instance, often intersperses council and committee meetings with segments on local history.
AA A comprehensive schedule detailing SnoCo TV's anticipated airtime will be released later this year, following the county's procurement of necessary equipment.
